Neenah Historical Society Turns 75!

In January 1948 while Wisconsin was celebrating its centennial, a group of Neenah residents gathered at the home of Helen Kimberly Stuart on Wisconsin Avenue to form the Neenah Historical Society. Understanding the importance of collecting, preserving and sharing local history, these charter members established an organization that is thriving as it turns 75 years old.

The first officers of the Neenah Historical Society had familiar last names (Kimberly, Gilbert, Stuart, Jandrey) but there have been many passionate leaders and volunteers throughout the last seventy five years. Some of the efforts made in the infancy of the Society included educational programming, collecting and preserving objects and materials, saving and restoring landmarks and publishing books. These same endeavors continue today.

For Christmas in 1948, the Society republished Cunningham's “History of Neenah” with the original woodcuts and typography as near to the original as possible. S.F. Shattuck spearheaded an update to this book with his “History of Neenah 1878-1958.” These titles are invaluable resources, detailing early life and events in our community. We reach for them constantly in our research.

Other efforts of the organization included securing the Olen Collection of Native American artifacts, helping rebuild and dedicate Doty Cabin, film festivals, original productions of plays and even the formation of the Neenah Landmarks Commission.

After 44 years of meeting at various locations throughout the community the Neenah Historical Society purchased and raised funds to restore the Octagon House and eventually the Ward House. These buildings provide the community a place to visit exhibits, do research and attend historical themed events. We are grateful for the foresight of those before us and wish to continue to build on the legacy of this great organization.
